What is Pilates?

Pilates is a very thorough exercise system that addresses the body and mind as a whole. The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in Britain and the US during and after World War I. His initial focus was to rehabilitate the injured, however as he refined his methods he realized that his regime is also an excellent way to promote general fitness.

Pilates is founded on core stability, breathing and the integrated use of muscle systems. It treats the body as a whole using proper body alignment, breath and precision of movement. Pilates targets the deep postural muscles and works by building strength from the inside out. Pilates can correct movement patterns, rebalance musculature around joints for functional strength, improve alignment, increase body awareness, help prevent injury and reduce pain.

The goal of Insideout Movement Therapy is to develop methods to allow clients to undertake the activities in their daily lives in ways that reduce pain and stress and promote efficient, graceful movement. Unlocking the ability to heal ourselves then helps make life the joyful experience it is meant to be.
